  • Sauro Longhi, DIIGA, Univ. Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy
  • Enrico Pagello, DEI, Univ. of Padova, Italy
  • Roland Siegwart, ASL/LSA, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland
Adam Borkowski received the Diploma in Engineering (B.Sc.) from Kaunas Polytechnical Institute (KPI), Lithuania, in 1964 and his Ph.D. degree from Vilnius Institute of Civil Engineering (VISI), Lithuania, in 1969. He was Research Assistant at the Department of Structural Mechanics of the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research (IFTR), PolishAcademy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland, from 1973 to 1980 and Associate Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Nonlinear Mechanics at the IFTR from 1980 to 1986. Since 1986, he is Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Adaptive Systems at IFTR. Since 2003 he is Deputy Chairman of the Division IV of the PolishAcademy of Sciences. His areas of interest lie in autonomous mobile robots, artificial intelligence, theory of optimization.

Wolfram Burgard
studied computer science at the University of Dortmund, Germany, and received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Bonn in 1991. Since 1999 Wolfram Burgard is associate professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Freiburg where he heads the research laboratory for Autonomous Intelligent Systems. His areas of interest lie in artificial intelligence and robotics. They cover mobile robot navigation, multi-robot systems, state estimation, human robot interaction, activity monitoring, and networked robots. Wolfram Burgard has published over 100 articles in journals and conferences and received eight best paper awards.

Massimo Callegari in 1990 joined the University of Genova as researcher.
From 1998 to 2004 he has been Associate Professor and since 2004 he is Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona. He is author or co-author of more than 100 scientific papers, member of the Italian Society of Engineers, AIMETA, ANIPLA, secretary of the Board of Directors of SIRI (Italian Association of Robotics and Automation), and referee of research projects for European Union, Italian Ministry of Research and Education and CNR (Italian Research Council). His main research fields are the analysis and design of dynamic mechanical systems, with special interest for parallel kinematics machines.

Dieter Fox
is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Bonn, Germany. Before joining UW, he spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the CMU Robot Learning Lab. His research focuses on probabilistic state estimation in robotics and activity recognition. He received various awards, including an NSF CAREER award and best paper awards at major robotics and artificial intelligence conferences.

Sauro Longhi received the Doctor degree in electronic engineering from the University of Ancona, Italy, in 1979 and postgraduate Diploma in automatic control from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy, in 1985. From 1981 to 1983, he was with the Telettra S.p.A., Chieti, Italy. In 1983 joined the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Automatica of the University of Ancona as Researcher. From 1992 to 2001 he has been Associate Professor in Control Systems Technologies, and since 2001 he is Full Professor at the University Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, and co-ordinator of the Doctoral Courses in "Intelligent Artificial Systems". He has been the General Chair of the IFAC conference on Control Applications in Marine Systems, CAMS 2004, Ancona. His research interests include control of mobile robots, sensor fusion, underwater vehicles and analysis and control of linear systems.

Enrico Pagello
received a "Laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica" at the Univ. of Padua, Italy, on 1973. From '73 till '83, he has been a Research Associate at the Inst. onBiomedical Eng. of the National Research Council of Italy, where now he is a part-time collaborator. Since '83 he has been a member of the Faculty of Engineering of The Univ. of Padua, where is now a Professor of Computer Science at the Dept. of Information Eng. During 77-78, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Lab. of A. I. of Stanford Univ. He has visited regularly the Dept of Precision Engineering of The Univ. of Tokyo, since 1994. He has been a General Chair of the Sixth Int. Conf. on Intelligent Autonomous Systems held in Venice on July 2000, and of RoboCup-2003, held in Padua on July 2003. He is a President of the Intelligent Autonomous Society. His current research interests are on applying Artificial Intelligence to Robotics with particular regards to the Multi-robot Systems field.

Roland Siegwart (1959) received his M.Sc. ME in 1983 and his Doctoral degree in 1989 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. After his Ph.D. studies he spent one year as a postdoc at Stanford University where he was involved in micro-robots and tactile gripping. From 1991 to 1996 he worked part time as R&D director at MECOS Traxler AG and as lecturer and deputy head at the Institute of Robotics, ETH. Since 1996 he is a full professor for Autonomous Systems and Robots at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL), and since 2002 also vice-dean of the School of Engineering. He leads a research group of around 25 people working in the field of robotics and mechatronics. Roland Siegwart published over 100 papers in the field of mechatronics and robotics including a text book on mobile robotics. He is an active member of various scientific committees and co-founder of several spin-off companies. He was the general Chair of IROS 2002 and he is currently VP for Technical Activities of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.
