The “2nd Summer School on Perception and Sensor Fusion in Mobile Robotics” will be held in Fermo, Italy,
from September 11 to September 16, 2006.
This edition will give
more space to perception issues, focusing on Computer Vision and Image Processing methods and
techniques that are more suitable in mobile robotics.
Fermo is one of the most lively centres of the Marche Region. It is
located at about 75 km to the south of Ancona, a stone's throw away or 5km from Porto San Giorgio on the
coast, with the rest of the territory heading inland towards the borders of Umbria and the Monte Sibillini.
Within 50km the land rises from sea level to 2478 m at Mount Vettore. This zone is spectacular and off all
the main tourist routes.
City of studies, Fermo can boast the most ancient university center, founded in 825 by Lotario I and
continued till 1826. During the middle age was very blooming: reached 1200 students as to compete with the
Bologna University.
Today it is the seat of a Faculty of Engineering of the Università Politecnica delle
Marche.
Lessons will be held in the at the Engineering Faculty of the Università Politecnica delle Marche in Fermo.
The lesson room is fully equipped for teaching and several up-to-date personal computers are available in
the laboratory for tutorials and exercises. Wireless broadband internet connection is also available in the
building.
The summer school offers full board and lodging to all participants. Students will be hosted in a hotel located
in the city centre at a walking distance from the University. Lodging will be in triple or double/twin rooms with
radio and TV, direct dial telephone and internet connection. Breakfast will be in hotel while lunches and
dinners will be supplied at the university students’ restaurant and in a city restaurant, respectively.

Objectives and contents
The principal objective of this six-day school is to introduce the state of the art in machine perception and
sensor fusion in mobile robotics to young researchers.
Mobile robotics is a rapidly maturing technology for both indoor and outdoor applications. Mobile robots must
have a high degree of interactivity with and adaptability to their surrounding environment.
Perception
consists in acquiring real word representations by interacting with the environment using many different
sensors (camera, laser, sonar, radar, GPS, etc.). The integration of sensor data is fundamental in the
learning and planning processes, whose aim is modifying these internal representations to provide more
robust solutions and to accomplish tasks better and better.
The main goal of this summer school is to bring to students' attention the leading edge topics and recent
trends related with autonomous mobile robots.
While the first edition of PSFMR, held in Ancona on last
September (http://psfmr.univpm.it/2005), was mainly centered on sensor fusion techniques, this edition will give
more space to perception issues, focusing on Computer Vision and Image Processing methods and
techniques that are more suitable in mobile robotics.
In more detail, the following three principal topics will be discussed:
1. sensors for perception
2. computer vision, image analysis and processing
3. multi-sensor fusion
The instructors are researchers coming from prestigious research centres and universities with high
experience in the mobile robotic field. Most of them are working in cutting-edge researches and/or already
taught in similar schools.
English is the official language of the summer school.
